Common Problems with Artificial Turf

Some synthetic turf issues may be easy tasks a homeowner can perform, but others require expert attention.

Artificial turf is a solid replacement for natural grass on sports fields, residential lawns, and commercial areas. It's durable and doesn't need as much attention as natural grass. Yet, while it can resist much, it isn't infallible.

Let's discuss some common artificial turf issues and how to manage them.

Problems with draining

If the turf isn't installed correctly or dirt and debris block the drains, the water can pool on the surface, which is unhygienic and causes damage to the synthetic materials. For it to drain properly, it needs exit drains or have its base adjusted to improve the water flow.

Weeds

Synthetic grass isn't immune to weeds. They can grow around the edges or through drainage holes, which could lead to clogs. Apply weed killer and, if necessary, manually remove weeds that penetrate the turf.

Sinking spots and slumps

The base of the turf may settle unevenly, which leads to sinking spots and slumps over time. To repair it, a professional would need to lift the affected area, add a new base, level that base, and then reinstall the turf.

Bad smells

If an area (such as a private yard) with artificial turf frequently welcomes pets and other animals, it may be prone to foul smells due to pet waste. Professionals use enzyme cleaners to disinfect and deodorize the material.

Tears and punctures

If the grass comes in contact with sharp objects, it can puncture and rip. Note that this can be the result of nothing more than heavy use. A turf cleaning expert can fix these punctures and tears. However, this option only works as long as they're relatively small.

Matting

The turf may be subject to heavy foot traffic, especially if it's a sports field. The foot traffic can flatten the fibers, which is unsightly and wears out the materials. It needs brushing against the grain to keep the fibers upright and to avoid matting.

Overheating

One downside of synthetic turf is that it isn't quite as heat-resistant as natural grass. It can become hot and uncomfortable to stand on. Cool it down by sprinkling some water on it.

Infill problems

Rake or brush the turf periodically to prevent infill problems like compaction, which could make it harder for water to drain from the surface.

Also, the infill might be displaced, which makes the surface uneven and can lead to some of the problems above. Therefore, it might be necessary to have a professional turf repair service check and redistribute the infill.
